During the 1930s and 1940s, in the years of the Great Terror of the Stalin regime, 20 million people died in labor camps, of famine or in mass executions. The film recounts this history of loss in the Ukraine. The Great Terror relied on widespread denunciations and confessions elicited through torture. Memories of this tragic period are preserved in the ritual exhumation and reburial of innumerable mass graves, by the riveting testimony of survivors. |
